Whose Genes Are You Wearing?

UT Southwestern is the only research-based clinical program in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex to offer genetic counseling and testing for all types of cancer. Our team of cancer genetics experts helps patients identify their risk of developing cancer and provides information and guidance to help them manage their health.

Beating Breast Cancer with Genetic Testing

One in eight women in the United States will develop invasive breast cancer. UT Southwestern Medical Center is using genetic testing to decrease that number.

Who: Anyone who is concerned about inherited risk of cancer, which is typically due to a history of cancer in the family or a personal history of cancer, should consider genetic testing. Learn which populations are at the highest risk for inherited cancer.

What: We offer an in-depth cancer genetic risk assessment that allows our team of experts to recommend certain risk-reduction options such as screenings or other medical interventions, as well as other resources for follow-up care. Learn more about how a cancer genetic consultation can help provide proactive and tailored recommendations for cancer risk reduction.

Why: Approximately 5 to 10 percent of all cancers are a result of a specific inherited mutation, and an estimated 30 percent of cancers are related to a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Information patients can gain from understanding their hereditary cancer risk might impact treatment decisions and personal risk-reduction options and can help determine if other relatives are at an increased risk of developing cancer. The more you know, the more you can help prevent cancer.
