Mary Banner, M.S., APRN, CNM, is a certified nurse-midwife at UT Southwestern Medical Center.

Ms. Banner received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Texas Woman's University where she was given the opportunity to work as a summer extern at St. Paul Hospital in labor and delivery. She then worked as a labor and delivery nurse, and then earned a Master Degree in Woman's Health at Texas Woman's University.

She subsequently attended Parkland School of Midwifery, associated with UT Southwestern. After being certified and credentialed as a nurse-midwife, she stayed at Parkland as a staff nurse midwife for nearly five years. She has also spent time at McKinney Hospital, Charlton Methodist Hospital, and in private practice.

Ms. Banner became the first midwife on staff at William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital in April 2015. Coming back to UT Southwestern more than 20 years later, she is now working with many of the doctors and nurses that she started her career in nursing with.

She is a native Texan, who was born in Houston and then moved to Dallas as a child.  For her, nursing was initially inspired by memories of her grandmother who was known as a "Granny midwife," then further encouraged when she coached her sister-in-law in childbirth.  From the first birth she participated in, she knew she wanted to support women in the most beautiful experience in life, birth. Her favorite part is watching the new mother and father fall in love with the process of giving life and building a family.
