Biography
Norberto Rodríguez-Báez, M.D., is a Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at UT Southwestern Medical Center, where he also serves as Director of the Pediatric Gastroenterology Fellowship Program and Director of pediatric gastroenterology resident and medical student education. He specializes in the care of pediatric patients with gastrointestinal and liver diseases.
Dr. Rodríguez-Báez earned his medical degree at the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine, where he also performed his residency in pediatrics, serving an additional year as Chief Resident. He received advanced training in pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology, and nutrition through a fellowship at Stanford University Medical Center.
Certified by the American Board of Pediatrics in general pediatrics, pediatric gastroenterology, and transplant hepatology, he joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2001.
Dr. Rodríguez-Báez’s clinical and research interests focus on viral hepatitis, acute liver failure, fatty liver, and chronic liver disease. He is currently participating in several National Institutes of Health-funded clinical research projects in liver disease. He has published original research articles, case reports, and book chapters, and he is a reviewer for multiple medical journals, including the Journal of Pediatrics, Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition, Pediatric Infectious Diseases Journal, Pediatric Nephrology, Pediatric Transplantation, and Pediatrics.
Dr. Rodríguez-Báez is considered a national and international expert in pediatric liver disease and medical education. He has been an invited speaker at several national meetings and has delivered presentations in Argentina, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and Ecuador, among other countries.
At UT Southwestern, he is also actively involved with the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, serving as faculty advisor for Latino and African American medical students.
He has received several awards for his outstanding performance as an educator, and he has frequently been named a D Magazine Best Pediatric Specialist.
He is a member of several professional medical organizations, including the North American Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (NASPGHAN), for which he has held multiple leadership roles over the past decade and is currently Secretary-Treasurer (2020-2023).
