Biography

Richard Samade, M.D., Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, with secondary appointments in the Departments of Plastic Surgery and Biomedical Engineering at UT Southwestern Medical Center. He specializes in hand, wrist, and elbow surgery.

Dr. Samade earned his medical degree at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. He completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and gained advanced training in orthopaedic hand surgery through a clinical fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery and Weill Cornell Medical Center. He also holds a doctoral degree in biomedical engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, he joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2022.

A prolific lecturer and presenter, Dr. Samade has published numerous academic articles related to his areas of expertise, which include pediatric and adult upper-extremity trauma, quality improvement in hand surgery, basic science processes in bone healing and remodeling, hand and wrist arthritis, arthroplasty, and medical and professional education.

In addition, he has contributed to the book Synopsis of Hand Surgery, and he holds four patents. He is the recipient of an L30 clinical research grant from the National Institute for Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases.

Dr. Samade is a member of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, the American Association for Hand Surgery, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Medical Association, and the Orthopaedic Research Society. He is also a reviewer for the Journal of Hand Surgery and the Journal of Orthopaedic Research.

He serves as Co-Principal Investigator at the Orthopaedic Surgery 3D Printing Lab with Robert Weinschenk, M.D.

Dr. Samade is consulted on hand and upper-extremity injuries for local sports teams from Richardson High School and the University of Texas at Dallas.

Personal Note

When he’s not at work, Dr. Samade enjoys hiking, running, traveling, and constantly learning new things.
