Tomas Garzon-Muvdi, M.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurological Surgery at UT Southwestern Medical Center.

Dr. Garzon-Muvdi earned his medical degree at the Universidad Autónoma de San Luis Potosí in Mexico. He completed a residency in neurosurgery at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and received advanced training in minimally invasive/cranial base surgery through a fellowship at Thomas Jefferson University, under the mentorship of Dr. James Evans. He also holds a master’s degree in physiology and neuroscience from Wright State University.

Before his residency, Dr. Garzon-Muvdi completed a three-year postdoctoral fellowship in neuro-oncology, researching the mechanisms that promote glioblastoma cell invasion. During his residency, he spent two years investigating the mechanisms that brain tumors use to elude the immune system and different ways to apply immunotherapy to treat brain tumors.

He joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2019.

Dr. Garzon-Muvdi has published many academic articles, delivered a number of presentations, and contributed to the sixth edition of the book Schmidek and Sweet: Operative Neurosurgical Techniques: Indications, Methods and Results, among other neurosurgical books. He is an active member of the North American Skull Base Society and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons.

In his research activities, Dr. Garzon-Muvdi is focused on increasing the response of brain tumors to immunotherapy strategies aimed at increasing the activity of immune cells and recognizing and destroying cancer cells. He is also interested in the clinical outcomes of patients with brain tumors and skull base tumors.
