Biography

Abhishek Makkar, M.D., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at UT Southwestern Medical Center. He specializes in neonatal extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), pulmonary hypertension, neonatal telemedicine, and regional neonatal systems of care. His clinical and academic work focuses on expanding access to specialized neonatal care through innovation in telemedicine, outreach, and quality improvement.

Dr. Makkar earned his medical degree at Pandit Bhagwat Dayal Sharma Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences in India. He completed a residency in pediatrics at PennState Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. He received advanced training through a neonatal-perinatal medicine fellowship at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital, where he served as Chief Fellow during his final year of training.

Certified by the American Board of Pediatrics in neonatal-perinatal medicine, he joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2023.

Dr. Makkar is the Medical Director of Neonatal ECMO at Children’s Medical Center Dallas. He also leads the institution's neonatal outreach operations and neonatal telemedicine program, collaborating with regional hospitals to improve access to specialized neonatal care through education, consultation, and innovative telehealth programs.

He is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, including its Section on Telehealth Care and the Supporting Pediatric Research on Outcomes and Utilization of Telehealth network. Dr. Makkar is an active member of the Children's Hospital Neonatal Consortium, contributing to its ECMO, Digital Health, and Global Health Workgroups.

Dr. Makkar has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and book chapters on neonatal ECMO, telemedicine, and neonatal resuscitation. He serves on the editorial board of PLOS One and is a reviewer for multiple pediatric and neonatal journals.

Personal Note

When he’s not at work, Dr. Makkar enjoys spending time with his family, traveling, hiking, and playing tennis and cricket.
