Biography

Alex Valadka, M.D., is a Professor in the Department of Neurological Surgery at UT Southwestern Medical Center. He specializes in neurotrauma and neurocritical care.

Dr. Valadka earned his medical degree at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine and completed a residency in neurological surgery at the Medical College of Virginia.

He is certified in neurosurgery by the American Board of Neurological Surgery and in neurocritical care by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and the Committee on Accreditation of Subspecialty Training for the Society of Neurological Surgeons. He joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2022.

Dr. Valadka is Chief of Neurological Surgery for the Parkland Health & Hospital System. Previously, he was Chair of Neurosurgery at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine and, before that, Chair and Chief Executive Officer of the Seton Brain and Spine Institute in Austin.

He has served in numerous leadership roles in neurosurgery and neurotrauma, including as President of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Director of the American Board of Neurological Surgery, Chair of the Neurosurgical Specialty Group of the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma, and Chair of the Neurological/Behavioral Health Subcommittee of the Defense Health Board. He lectures widely and serves as an editor and ad hoc reviewer for numerous academic journals.

His current research interests include improved diagnostics and management in the care of neurotrauma and critical care patients.
