Anna Tumyan, M.D., is a Faculty Associate in the Department of Endocrinology at UT Southwestern Medical School. Her clinical treatments focus primarily on hypothyroidism and general endocrinology, and her research revolves around Type 2 diabetes and obesity.

Dr. Tumyan was born and raised in Armenia, and she earned her medical degree in the country’s capital, at Yerevan State Medical University. She then performed an internal medicine residency at Southern Illinois University and went on to receive advanced training in endocrinology and metabolism through a fellowship at UT Southwestern.

Prior to joining UT Southwestern, Dr. Tumyan was an Assistant Professor at Southern Illinois School of Medicine, where her main focus was improving health care for underserved populations as well as educating medical students and residents.

Dr. Tumyan is involved in a number of clinical trials investigating novel treatments for Type 2 diabetes and how to prevent its complications. She is also part of numerous professional organizations, including the American Association of Endocrinologists, the Endocrine Society, and the American Diabetes Association.

Hypothyroidism and How to Treat It

Dr. Tumyan is an expert at caring for patients with hypothyroidism, or underactive thyroid disease, a condition in which the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormones to keep the body functioning normally. Some common causes of hypothyroidism include thyroiditis due to autoimmune disease, surgical removal of the thyroid, thyroid destruction from radiation treatment to the neck area, pituitary disease, medications, and severe iodine deficiency.

Part of Dr. Tumyan’s care for hypothyroidism involves replacing the amount of thyroid hormones that a patient’s own thyroid can no longer make. The most effective and reliable thyroid replacement hormone is called levothyroxine, a synthetic medication that mimics the thyroxine the thyroid gland makes. Once treatment is started, Dr. Tumyan monitors the thyroid function to ensure the right dose of medicine is taken.
