Biography
Brianna Slatnick, M.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at UT Southwestern Medical Center. She is a fellowship-trained abdominal wall reconstruction surgeon dedicated to delivering best-in-class care for patients with complex hernias and abdominal wall conditions. Her areas of expertise include inguinal, ventral, flank, and umbilical hernias, as well as parastomal hernia repair; enterocutaneous fistula repair; and mesh removal and revision surgery. She is experienced in both minimally invasive (robotic and laparoscopic) and open techniques, tailoring each operation to a patient’s unique anatomy and surgical history.
Dr. Slatnick performs repairs of hernias of all sizes – from very small to very large and complex. She is happy to meet with patients for a consultation and develop an individualized surgical plan to meet their needs.
Dr. Slatnick’s other areas of expertise include:
- Complex redo hernia repair (for patients who have had multiple prior hernia repairs)
- Parastomal hernia repair, including for ileal conduits, colostomies, and ileostomies
- Hernia repair after major abdominal surgery, such as after a liver, kidney, or intestinal transplant, or after oncologic operations
- Surgical management of chronic groin pain
Dr. Slatnick earned her medical degree from the University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences in Ohio. She went on to complete her general surgery residency at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, New Jersey, where she received comprehensive training. She gained advanced training through a surgical innovation fellowship at Harvard Medical School and Boston Children’s Hospital, focusing on device development and clinical innovation. She then completed a highly specialized fellowship in complex hernia and abdominal wall reconstruction at the Cleveland Clinic.
In 2025, Dr. Slatnick was recruited to UT Southwestern to serve as Director of the Complex Abdominal Wall Reconstruction Program.
She is a member of several professional organizations, including the American College of Surgeons, the Abdominal Core Health Quality Collaborative, the American Hernia Society, and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons. She also holds a U.S. patent for a patient-positioning device and has several other medical innovations awaiting patent approval. Her work has been featured in national meetings, invited panels, and peer-reviewed publications.
