Biography

Emmanuel C. Ohuabunwa, M.D., M.B.A., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center. He specializes in health equity, quality, and advocacy.

Dr. Ohuabunwa earned his medical degree at Yale University, where he also completed a residency in emergency medicine. He also holds a master’s degree in business administration from the Yale School of Management.

He joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2021.

Among his other roles at UT Southwestern, Dr. Ohuabunwa is a resident advisor for the Clinical Competency Committee. On the national level, he has served as the recruitment lead and panelist representing UT Southwestern Emergency Medicine at the annual Student National Medical Association Annual Conference. He also serves on the Educational Trust committee for the Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas.

Dr. Ohuabunwa has presented his work widely and published numerous peer-reviewed articles in journals related to his areas of interest. In his most recent publication in the Annals of Emergency Medicine, titled “Say Our Names. We Are Doctors Too,” Dr. Ohuabunwa proposed the Ask, Learn, Practice (ALP) framework for dealing with ethnically distinct names. He speaks nationally on the importance of celebrating name diversity in health care and the negative consequences of name-based microaggressions.

In 2021, Dr. Ohuabunwa received a Certificate of Congressional Recognition for community service from Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee. He was also listed on the Urban Professionals Network 40 under 40 and the Who’s Who Diaspora: the Nigerian Story.

Personal Note

In his free time, Dr. Ohuabunwa enjoys reading, cooking, mentoring students, and playing basketball.
