Biography
George Wendel, M.D., is a Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at UT Southwestern Medical Center. He specializes in medical complications in pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections, and infectious diseases in pregnancy.
Dr. Wendel earned his medical degree at Saint Louis University School of Medicine. He completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology and received advanced training through a maternal-fetal medicine fellowship at UT Southwestern Medical Center.
Certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology in maternal-fetal medicine, he joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 1982. He served as the Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program Director from 1994 to 2012.
Dr. Wendel served as Associate Executive Director and Executive Director of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology from 2012 to 2023. He has served as Chair of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Obstetrics and Gynecology Review Committee and as a member of the ACGME Board of Directors. He also served as a member of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) Board of Directors. He is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the American Gynecological & Obstetrical Society, and the Infectious Diseases Society of America. He also served a term as President of the Texas Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and he is a member of several other professional organizations.
His clinical interests include graduate medical education. His research interests include infectious diseases in pregnancy, maternal-fetal medicine, and sexually transmitted infections.
Dr. Wendel has served many times as a panelist and invited lecturer, contributed to numerous books, served as Associate Editor for the 22nd edition of Williams Obstetrics, and published more than 160 articles related to his areas of expertise.
In 2019, he earned the Distinguished Service Award from the ABMS.
Personal Note
When he’s not at work, Dr. Wendel enjoys cycling, walking, visiting his son and daughter, and following his grandchildrens’ lives.
