Biography

James Berry, M.D., is a Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Management at UT Southwestern Medical Center, where he also serves as the Vice Chair for Faculty Affairs. He specializes in anesthesia for adult ENT patients. 

Dr. Berry earned his medical degree and completed a residency in anesthesiology at the UT Health Science Center at Houston. He received advanced training in anesthesiology through a fellowship at St. Thomas' Hospital in London. 

Certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology, he joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2016. 

Dr. Berry is the Associate Editor for Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine and a section editor for AnesthesiologyMind to Mind. He served on the environmental task force for the American Society of Anesthesiologists and on the sustainability committee for the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation. He currently serves as a senior examiner for the American Board of Anesthesiology. 

He is a member of the Texas Society of Anesthesiologists and the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society. In 2006 and 2007, Dr. Berry received the Perioperative Innovation Award from Vanderbilt University Medical Center, for his work with wearable computing and virtual presence in the operating room.

Dr. Berry has delivered scores of national and international presentations, edited the second edition of the book Anesthesia Equipment: Principles and Applications, and published numerous academic articles related to anesthesia. He holds a number of patents related to the recovery and potential reuse of volatile anesthetics.
