Biography

Karen Irizarry, M.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at UT Southwestern Medical Center. She specializes in burn critical care medicine, acute burn surgery, and burn reconstructive surgery.

Dr. Irizarry earned her medical degree at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. She completed a residency in surgery and served as Recruitment Chief Resident at East Jefferson General Hospital, a Tulane University affiliate. She gained advanced training through a burn and surgical critical care fellowship at Parkland Memorial Hospital.

Certified by the American Board of Surgery in general surgery and surgical critical care, Dr. Irizarry joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2025.

She is a member of the American Burn Association, the American College of Physicians, the American College of Surgeons, and the American Medical Association.

Dr. Irizarry has delivered presentations and published peer-reviewed academic articles related to her areas of expertise.

Personal Note

When she’s not at work, Dr. Irizarry enjoys staying active through running, taking Peloton classes, and practicing hot yoga; reading books on Kindle Unlimited; preparing all the recipes in an entire cookbook; and making really good coffee.
