Biography

Matthew Fleming, M.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery’s Division of Burn, Trauma, Acute and Critical Care Surgery at UT Southwestern Medical Center. He specializes in trauma and emergency surgery, minimally invasive hernia repair, and rib plating.

Dr. Fleming earned his medical degree at the Boston University School of Medicine. He completed a residency in general surgery at Yale New Haven Hospital, where he served as Chief Resident for Education. He received advanced training through a surgical critical care, acute care surgery, and trauma fellowship at Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center in Miami, Florida. He also completed a research fellowship in trauma and emergency general surgery at the Yale School of Medicine.

He joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2024.

Dr. Fleming has delivered presentations and published peer-reviewed academic articles related to his areas of expertise.

He is a member of the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma and the American College of Surgeons and is an associate member of the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma.

Personal Note

When he’s not at work, Dr. Fleming enjoys hiking and running, cooking and grilling, traveling, and hanging out with his partner and 7-year-old rescue dog.
