Meet Peter Crisologo

Diabetes-Related Foot and Ankle Conditions Specialist in Dallas, Texas

Peter (Andrew) Crisologo, D.P.M., is the Medical Director of Diabetic Limb Salvage for Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, Texas. He specializes in diabetes-related foot and ankle conditions with a focus on diabetic limb preservation.

Focused Approach to Patients with Diabetic Limb Complications

At UT Southwestern's Parkland Hospital, a multidisciplinary team of doctors treats patients with limb complications caused by diabetes and neuropathy. These complications typically include nonhealing ulcers that lead to infection, followed by surgery and often extended hospital stays.

UT Southwestern offers patients with foot and ankle conditions a range of strategies and therapies, including education and nonsurgical options.

“Our skilled specialists address all components of patient care, from infectious disease to physical and occupational therapy. We continue to grow and develop coordinated services for inpatient and outpatient services so there is one continuum of care for our patients with diabetes,” Dr. Crisologo says.

Prevention is imperative for diabetic patients, he says.

“People with diabetes are prone to foot problems due to neuropathy, the inability to feel sensation in your foot. Small things like a blister, scrape, or ingrown toenail can become serious,” Dr. Crisologo says. “Many times, a person won’t set up an appointment to see their doctor because they don’t think it’s a big deal, but early detection truly helps. It can save a patient from future amputation.”

Dr. Crisologo recommends people with diabetes check their feet daily for blisters or open sores, wash and dry their feet thoroughly, always wear socks and shoes, and have their doctor check their feet at every visit.

Functional Limb Preservation in Dallas, Texas

Dr. Crisologo specializes in functional limb preservation and advanced therapies and limb-sparing techniques to avoid amputation.

“We must look at the long-term approach to limb preservation. First and foremost, we want to preserve the limb, but we must decide what makes the most sense in the long term,” Dr. Crisologo says. “For instance, if we remove a small portion of the foot, will it preserve the limb? If yes, we will take that route because, ultimately, it’s better for the patient in the long run.”

The new Moody Outpatient Center at Parkland Hospital houses numerous specialists and clinics, including the Diabetic Limb Salvage Service. Dr. Crisologo believes the new facility is an impetus for the growth of the program.

“At the Moody Building, we have additional treatment modalities, and access to state-of-the-art equipment. These invested resources allow us to pursue limb preservation and staged management, and serve these patients to the best of our ability.”

The center’s advancements aren’t just about equipment – they also foster collaboration among the specialists with an integrated diabetic foot clinic along with the infectious disease and endocrinology specialists.

“It's incredible to work in an environment where various experts from different disciplines are focused on this disease." Dr. Crisologo says. "We have a wealth of resources and knowledge we can lean into and learn from."

The diabetic limb salvage physicians and surgeons strive to help patients maintain their mobility and quality of life. UT Southwestern's renowned facility, integrated system, and culture of collaboration make it possible.

"My niche is diabetic limb salvage, while others specialize in plastic surgery, vascular surgery, internal medicine, and more," Dr. Crisologo says. "UT Southwestern offers the best care within every discipline, interconnected under one roof."

Dr. Crisologo is passionate about helping his patients get healthy and return to their new normal.

"Even though we might come with news the patient doesn't want to hear, we are always thinking of their long-term health. We can't take the risk away, but we can do as much as we can to reduce that risk."

Personal Note

Outside of work, Dr. Crisologo enjoys spending time with his wife and four children, gardening, and growing bonsai trees.
