Biography
Sonali Patel, M.D., Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at UT Southwestern Medical Center. She specializes in preventive, general, and acute-care pediatric cardiology.
Dr. Patel earned her medical degree and a doctoral degree in epidemiology at the University of Iowa, where she also completed a residency in pediatrics and a fellowship in pediatric cardiology.
Certified in pediatrics and pediatric cardiology by the American Board of Pediatrics, she joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2022. She previously was Director of the Pediatric Hypertension and Pediatric Preventive Cardiology programs at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, Colorado. She also directed the university’s pediatric cardiology education programs for medical students, residents, and fellows.
At UT Southwestern, Dr. Patel is Director of Heart Center Education and Medical Director of Acute Care Cardiology and Pediatric Cardiology.
She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and is also a member of multiple professional societies, including the Association for Clinical Research Training, and the American College of Cardiology.
As a member of the American Heart Association, Dr. Patel serves on the Cardiorenal Metabolic Health Initiative Working Group and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Pediatric Cardiology Appeals Panel. In addition, she serves as Chair of Analytics of the Scientific Review Committee for the Pediatric Acute Care Cardiology Collaborative.
She is an ad hoc reviewer for several academic journals, including the Journal of Clinical Medicine, Vascular Medicine, The Lancet Public Health, and Hypertension.
Her research interests include long-term outcomes in inpatient pediatric cardiology and the epidemiology of pediatric blood pressure and cholesterol disorders and their role in the development of adult cardiovascular disease.
Dr. Patel has been invited to speak at numerous venues across the country and has published many articles in peer-reviewed journals related to her areas of interest. Her recent publications include a contribution to the book Pediatric Cardiology: Fetal, Pediatric, and Adult Congenital Heart Diseases.

When she’s not at work, Dr. Patel enjoys cooking, gardening, and shopping for antiques.
