Biography

Thomas Lynn Spain Jr., M.D., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Management at UT Southwestern Medical Center. He specializes in pediatric pain management.

Dr. Spain holds an undergraduate degree in biomedical engineering from Johns Hopkins University. He earned his medical degree at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and completed a residency in anesthesiology at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. He then received advanced training in pain management and pediatric anesthesiology through separate fellowships at MD Anderson Cancer Center and UT Southwestern, respectively. 

Board certified in anesthesiology, pediatric anesthesiology, pain medicine, and hospice and palliative care, Dr. Spain joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2008. He has additional certifications in headache medicine and addiction medicine. 

Dr. Spain’s clinical and research interests include anesthesia for pediatric oncology patients, medical acupuncture, and palliative care. In addition to his work at UT Southwestern, Dr. Spain serves as Medical Director of Pain Management Services at Children's Health and as an attending physician in the Headache Clinic and the Chronic Pain Clinic at Children’s Medical Center. 

He is a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the Society for Pediatric Anesthesia, the Society for Pediatric Pain Medicine, the Texas Pain Society, and the Texas Society of Anesthesiologists. 

Dr. Spain has been invited to lecture throughout the U.S. and internationally for the Israeli Pain Association, the Texas Pain Society, and the Texas Medical Association.  

Personal Note

Dr. Spain’s hobbies include studying Spanish, running, serving in his church, and making medical mission trips to India, Ethiopia, Honduras, Belize, and Haiti.
