How cervical cancer screening with HPV testing is saving lives

Claudia Werner, M.D., is a Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at UT Southwestern Medical Center. She specializes in cervical cancer prevention, HPV-related disease, and general office gynecology.
Dr. Werner earned her medical degree at UTHealth Houston’s McGovern Medical School. Following her internship in obstetrics and gynecology at the St. Joseph Medical Center, she completed her ob/gyn residency at Tufts University Affiliated Hospitals in Boston. She also holds an undergraduate degree in biology from Smith College.
Certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dr. Werner joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 1989. In addition to being a full-time staff physician, she serves in the Parkland Health system as Medical Director of Gynecology Dysplasia Services and Medical Director of Community Gynecology.
Dr. Werner is a contributing author to the Williams Gynecology textbook. Her peer-reviewed articles and lectures cover topics such as HPV-related disease, cervical cancer screening, management of abnormal cervical cytology and histology, and colposcopy standards.
She is a member of the Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening Clinical Workgroup for the Texas Department of State Health Services, as well as the American Cancer Society's Cervical Cancer Screening Initiative and its National Roundtable on Cervical Cancer Steering Committee.
In addition, she is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and a member of the Texas Medical Association, the Dallas County Medical Society and the American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology, for which she has served on multiple clinical practice committees.
Outside of work, Dr. Werner enjoys spending time with family and friends, doing yardwork, and needlepoint.
