Biography

Jing Chen, M.D., is a Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine, the Department of Public Health, and the Charles and Jane Pak Center for Mineral Metabolism and Clinical Research at UT Southwestern Medical Center.

Dr. Chen earned her medical degree from Jiangxi Medical College in China, followed by advanced training at Peking Union Medical College (Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences), where she earned a Master of Medical Sciences. She completed her internal medicine residency and a nephrology clinical fellowship at Tulane University School of Medicine. She also holds a master's degree in biotechnology from Johns Hopkins University.

Certified in internal medicine and nephrology by the American Board of Internal Medicine and certified by the American Hypertension Specialist Certification Program, Dr. Chen joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2024. She was previously a professor at Tulane University School of Medicine, where she served as clinical director of the Translational Science Institute and co-director of the Office of Health Research.

Dr. Chen’s research focuses on chronic kidney disease (CKD) and its associated conditions, such as hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and diabetic nephropathy. She has been the principal investigator or co-investigator in over 35 NIH-supported research projects, including the Chronic Renal Insufficiency Cohort Study, which investigates novel risk factors for CKD progression and associated cardiovascular disease, and a study aimed at enhancing diagnostic approaches for peripheral artery disease in CKD patients.

She has delivered scores of presentations, contributed to the books Diabetes and Kidney Disease and Advanced Therapy in Hypertension and Vascular Disease, and published more than 370 articles related to her areas of expertise.

Dr. Chen is an active member of the American Society of Nephrology, the American Medical Association, and the American Heart Association.

Since 2022, she has been recognized annually as a Castle Connolly Top Doctor and has received its Exceptional Women in Medicine award.

When she’s not at work, Dr. Chen enjoys reading, listening to music, and spending quality time with her family.
