Biography

Greg Fitz, M.D., is a Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center. Holder of the Nadine and Tom Craddick Distinguished Chair in Medical Science, he serves as Special Assistant to the President and Director of Global Affairs. He specializes in liver diseases.

Dr. Fitz earned his medical degree at Duke University School of Medicine. He completed a residency in internal medicine at University of California, San Francisco, where he also received advanced training through a fellowship in gastroenterology.

Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, Dr. Fitz joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2003. He served as Chair of Internal Medicine from 2003 to 2009 and as Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, Provost, and Dean of UT Southwestern Medical School from 2009 through 2018.

Dr. Fitz’s research interests include the cellular mechanisms of insulin resistance, biliary secretion, epithelial ion channels, and purinergic signaling. The author of numerous scholarly articles, reviews, book chapters, and invited lectures, he is also a co-editor of major textbooks in gastroenterology, liver diseases, internal medicine, and physiology.

A former President of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, he is a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation, the Association of American Physicians, and the Association of Professors of Medicine.
