Biography

Joseph T. Murphy, M.D., is a Professor in the Department of Surgery at UT Southwestern Medical Center. A pediatric surgeon at Children’s Health in Dallas and Plano since 2007, he specializes in the operative management of childhood cancers, congenital anomalies, and thoracic diagnoses. He also has interest and experience in the care of children with severe traumatic injury and critical care issues.

Dr. Murphy obtained a Bachelor's degree in Biology at the State University of New York in Buffalo, a Master of Science in Biology at the University of Texas at Dallas, and his medical degree from UT Southwestern Medical Center. He completed a General Surgery residency and CORE laboratory research fellowship at UT Southwestern before joining the Department of Surgery faculty in 1996. 

He completed a Pediatric Surgery Fellowship at Children’s Medical Center, Dallas in 2007.  Dr. Murphy currently has admitting and operating privileges at Children’s Health in Dallas, Parkland Memorial Hospital, Clements University Hospital, Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital and Children’s Health in Plano. He serves on the Children's Health - Dallas Medical Credentials Committee. 

He is actively involved in UT Southwestern and Children’s Health educational programs, including the Academic Colleges at UT Southwestern and General Surgery resident training program. He is an ad-hoc reviewer for several professional journals and has authored recent articles, examining the diverse presentations of non-cutaneous juvenile xanthogranuloma disease, the use of the Puestow procedure for pancreatitis, and the diagnosis of invasive pulmonary fungal infections among pediatric oncology patients. Dr Murphy’s clinical research includes investigation of outcomes in children with solid tumors, particularly neuroblastoma, and renal and hepatic malignancies.

Dr. Murphy has been included in D Magazine's Best Doctors list numerous times.
