Biography

Kambiz Ameli, M.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at UT Southwestern Medical Center. He specializes in surgical neuro-ophthalmology, with expertise in blepharospasm, optic neuritis, ischemic optic neuropathy, double vision, eye pain, pseudotumor cerebri, thyroid eye disease, nystagmus, and giant cell arteritis.

Dr. Ameli earned his medical degree at Isfahan University of Medical Sciences in Iran. He completed a residency in ophthalmology and received advanced training through an ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery fellowship at Farabi Eye Hospital. He also completed an oculoplastics research fellowship at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, Florida; a pediatric ophthalmology fellowship at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri; and a neuro-ophthalmology fellowship at the University of Minnesota Medical Center.

He joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2025.

Dr. Ameli’s research interests include optic nerve regeneration, optic neuropathy, eye movement disorders, and pseudotumor cerebri. He has delivered national invited lectures, contributed to the book The Paralyzed Eyelid: A Practical Approach, and published academic articles related to his areas of expertise.

He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, the International Strabismological Association, and the North American Neuro-Ophthalmology Society.

Personal Note

When he’s not at work, Dr. Ameli enjoys hiking with his wife and cycling. They feel at home in Dallas. He also has an interest in photography.

Meet Dr. Ameli Zamani

Kambiz Ameli, M.D., is an ophthalmologist at UT Southwestern Medical Center, specializing in neuro-ophthalmology and adult strabismus surgery. He has advanced training through multiple fellowships and manages a wide range of complex conditions involving the eye, optic nerve, and brain, providing both surgical and nonsurgical care tailored to each patient.

At UT Southwestern, Dr. Ameli’s expertise includes blepharospasm chemodenervation, strabismus (eye misalignment) surgery, and the treatment of optic nerve inflammation, swelling, vision loss, facial spasms, and double vision.

“Almost every day, my patients are referred from various specialists with vision problems of uncertain cause, sometimes conditions that can lead to irreversible vision loss,” he says. “At UT Southwestern, we have the resources and expertise to preserve not only their sight but, in some cases, their lives.”
