Biography

Maria Bano, M.D., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at UT Southwestern Medical Center. She specializes in the use of exercise training to improve outcomes in children with heart failure and the management of complex congenital heart disease in children and young adults.

Dr. Bano earned her medical degree at the Aga Khan University Medical College in Karachi, Pakistan. She completed her residency in pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine and received advanced training in pediatric cardiology through a fellowship at Emory University School of Medicine.

Certified by the American Board of Pediatrics in pediatric cardiology, she joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2015. She completed additional training as a Clinical Instructor – Pediatric Heart Failure, Transplantation, and Mechanical Support before being appointed as an Assistant Professor in the Division of Pediatric Cardiology in 2016.

Among other roles, Dr. Bano is Director of the Cardiopulmonary Stress Laboratory at Children’s Health and leads the Cardiac Rehabilitation Task Force. She serves on the Fontan Protocol Development Committee for UT Southwestern and Children’s Health and is a member of several international committees, including the International Pediatric Transplant Association (IPTA)/Pediatric Heart Transplant Study (PHTS) Foundation Organizing Committee for the Thoracic Session.

Also a member of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation, the American Society for Artificial Internal Organs, and the American Heart Association, she serves on the editorial board of the American Society for Artificial Internal Organs Journal.

Dr. Bano’s research interests include exercise training in patients with Fontan physiology (complex single-ventricle heart disease) and the use of remote monitoring and virtual care to improve care delivery and outcomes in patients with complex heart disease.
