Biography

R. Nicholas Burns, M.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at UT Southwestern Medical Center. He specializes in maternal-fetal medicine.

Dr. Burns earned his medical degree at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. After performing his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and the Women and Infants Hospital of Rhode Island, he completed a fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine at the University of Washington in Seattle.

Board certified in obstetrics and gynecology and in maternal-fetal medicine, he joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2023.

Dr. Burns is a member of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the American Medical Association, the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics, and the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine, including its Patient Safety and Quality Committee.

His clinical and research interests include hypertensive disorders of pregnancy such as preeclampsia, critical care in obstetrics, quality and safety in obstetrics, and medical education. He has delivered numerous presentations and published peer-reviewed academic articles related to his areas of expertise.

Among his many accolades, he has received the Outstanding Resident Award for Professionalism and Humanism in Women’s Health and the National Faculty Award for Excellence in Resident Education.

Personal Note

When he is not at work, Dr. Burns enjoys tennis, pickleball, and podcasting.
