Biography

Oladipupo Olafiranye, M.D., M.S., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center. He is a member of the Division of Cardiology and specializes in preventive cardiology and interventional cardiology.

Dr. Olafiranye earned his medical degree at the Obafemi Awolowo University in Nigeria. He completed an internal medicine residency at the State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate Medical Center, where he also gained advanced training through a cardiovascular disease fellowship. He obtained additional training in interventional cardiology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Presbyterian, where he received the Galal M. Ziady Memorial Award for outstanding achievement in the care of cardiac patients.

He also holds a master's degree in clinical and translational research from the University of Pittsburgh.

Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in cardiology and interventional cardiology, he joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2023. He was previously an associate professor with tenure at the University of Pittsburgh.

Dr. Olafiranye serves as Associate Chief of Cardiology, Chief of Interventional Cardiology, and Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory for the VA North Texas Health Care System.

He is a Fellow of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions and the American College of Cardiology. He is also a member of the Association of Black Cardiologists and the American Heart Association. He is a frequent reviewer for several medical journals and associations.

Dr. Olafiranye's research interests include preventive cardiology, interventional cardiology, acute coronary syndrome, acute kidney injury, ischemic preconditioning, health disparities, genomics, and personalized medicine. His investigations have been funded by the National Institutes of Health and the VA Office of Clinical Science Research and Development.

He has given numerous national and international presentations and published many peer-reviewed research publications, review articles, and book chapters.

When he’s not at work, Dr. Olafiranye enjoys playing soccer and spending time with family and friends.
