Biography

Pedro Fernandez, M.D., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at UT Southwestern Medical Center. He specializes in integrated behavioral health, Latinx health, and LGBTQ+ health.

Dr. Fernandez earned his medical degree at the Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine and completed his residency in psychiatry there, too. He gained advanced training in psychosomatic medicine and consultation-liaison psychiatry through a fellowship at Yale New Haven Hospital.

Certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in psychiatry and consult-liaison psychiatry and by the American Board of Preventive Medicine in addiction medicine, he joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2017.

At UT Southwestern, Dr. Fernandez serves as Associate Program Director of the Combined Internal Medicine and Psychiatry Residency Program. He is also Medical Director of the Consult-Liaison Psychiatry Service and Co-Chief of Psychiatry at Parkland Health.

He serves on numerous committees and is Co-Chair of Parkland’s Opioid Treatment Task Force and Co-Chair of the Department of Psychiatry’s Research and Clinical Practice Subcommittee for the Anti-Racism and Discrimination Task Force.

Dr. Fernandez is a member of the Academy of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry and the American Association of Directors of Psychiatric Residency Training. He serves as recruitment liaison from UT Southwestern to the Association of Medicine and Psychiatry and is a regional member of the Texas Opioid Abatement Fund Council.

He has lectured widely and published several articles in peer-reviewed journals related to his areas of interest. He serves as an ad hoc reviewer for Journal of American Psychiatry.

In 2019, Dr. Fernandez was voted Outstanding Teacher of the Year for the Psychiatry Residency Program at UT Southwestern.

Personal Note

When he’s not working, Dr. Fernandez enjoys gardening, traveling, visiting museums, and watching reruns of The Golden Girls.
