Biography

Rebecca Gruchalla, M.D., Ph.D., is a Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center. She specializes in asthma, allergic rhinitis, drug allergy, and anaphylaxis.

Originally from Houston, Dr. Gruchalla holds a bachelor’s degree in microbiology from Texas Tech University in Lubbock. She earned her doctorate in immunology and her medical degree at UT Southwestern. She performed her residency in internal medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and returned to UT Southwestern for her fellowship training in allergy and immunology.

Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Allergy and Immunology, she joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 1990.

Dr. Gruchalla’s past clinical research focused on inner-city pediatric asthma. She led studies on the condition funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, serving as the Dallas site director of the multisite Inner City Asthma Consortium through 2021.

Her investigations have resulted in more than 90 publications in peer-reviewed journals and four book chapters. Additionally, she has presented her findings at scientific conferences throughout the United States and around the world. She has also served on the editorial board for several journals and as Section Head for NEJM Knowledge+.

Dr. Gruchalla is a past board member of the American Board of Allergy and Immunology; the Texas Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology Society; and the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, where she is a Fellow and serves on the credential and awards committees. She also is a Fellow of the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology and an active member of the Dallas County Medical Society.

Personal Note

When she’s not at work, Dr. Gruchalla enjoys doing Pilates, singing in choir, reading, and volunteering at First Presbyterian Church.
