Biography

Shani Shastri, M.D., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center. She specializes in chronic kidney disease, end-stage renal disease (ESRD) including hemodialysis, and peritoneal dialysis.

Dr. Shastri earned her medical degree at the K.J. Somaiya Medical College in Mumbai, India. She completed her residency in internal medicine at the University of Massachusetts and gained advanced training in nephrology through a fellowship at Tufts Medical Center. She also holds a master’s degree in public health from Loma Linda University and a master’s degree in clinical research from Tufts University.

Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in nephrology, she joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2011.

Dr. Shastri is the Medical Director of the UT Southwestern/DaVita Preston Joint Venture Hemodialysis and Peritoneal Dialysis Unit. At UT Southwestern, she serves as Chair of the Nephrology Fellowship Clinical Competency Committee and is a member of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee and the Fellowship Recruitment Committee.

Dr. Shastri’s research focuses on epidemiology and outcomes in chronic kidney disease and hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, cardiovascular outcomes in kidney disease, and aging. She has published articles in numerous peer-reviewed journals and co-authored chapters in several books, including Major Nonglomerular Disorders of the Kidney and Comprehensive Clinical Nephrology.

In 2021, Dr. Shastri received the Accountability Core Value Award from DaVita’s Physician Leadership as well as the Outstanding Patient Care Award in Nephrology from UT Southwestern.
