Biography

Steven Leonard, M.D., is Clinical Professor of Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery in the Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery at UT Southwestern Medical Center.

After earning his medical degree at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, Dr. Leonard completed a general surgery residency at UT Southwestern Medical Center and cardiothoracic surgery residency at the Medical University of South Carolina. He then completed a fellowship in pediatric and congenital cardiac surgery at The Children’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School in Boston.

After completion of his postgraduate training, Dr. Leonard joined the clinical staff at Children’s Medical Center Dallas as the second full-time pediatric cardiac surgeon. He practiced at Children’s for twenty-two years, initially in private practice and later as Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery at UT Southwestern Medical Center. He then served as Director of Congenital Cardiac Surgery for twelve years at Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children in Denver. After retiring from that position, he returned to Dallas and works at Children’s and UT Southwestern on a part-time basis.

Dr. Leonard is a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, American College of Surgeons, American Academy of Pediatrics, Parkland Surgical Society, and Aldo R. Castaneda Society of Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgery. While in Denver, Dr. Leonard was included in the Top Docs list for 5280 magazine 2010-2020.
