Biography
Yong Kwon, M.D., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery at UT Southwestern Medical Center. He specializes in pediatric abdominal transplantation, liver transplants using technical variant grafts, and surgical management of pediatric hepatic malignancies and portal hypertension.
Dr. Kwon earned his medical degree at Georgetown University School of Medicine. He completed a residency in general surgery and received advanced training through a transplant and hepatopancreatobiliary surgery fellowship at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. He also completed the Leadership Strategies for Evolving Health Care Executives program at Harvard University’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
Certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Society of Transplant Surgeons, he joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2024. He previously served as associate chief of pediatric transplantation and surgical director of pediatric liver transplant at Seattle Children's Hospital and as co-director of living donor liver transplant surgery at the University of Southern California.
At UT Southwestern, Dr. Kwon serves as Chief of Pediatric Abdominal Transplantation and Pediatric Liver Transplantation Surgical Director in the Division of Surgical Transplantation.
He has served as principal investigator or co-investigator for several clinical trials. He has delivered invited presentations, contributed to the book Surgical Decision Making, and published numerous academic articles related to his areas of expertise.
Dr. Kwon is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons, the International Liver Transplantation Society, the Society of Pediatric Liver Transplantation, and the International Society of Liver Surgeons.
Personal Note
When he’s not at work, Dr. Kwon enjoys spending time with his family, including his two young, active boys.
