It is estimated that 10 million Americans over age 50 have osteoporosis, while another 34 million are at risk for developing the bone disease. Osteoporosis and other bone diseases have a significant impact on quality of life and can affect a person’s ability to walk, stand up, and even dress. Ultimately, it can lead to premature death.

Evaluation

In addition to bone density tests, our physicians can perform a bone biopsy for histomorphometric analysis in patients with complex bone disorders, a procedure that is only available at a few centers in the U.S.

Treatments

Patients are given lifestyle counseling to prevent bone loss and may be prescribed medication to manage their disease. UT Southwestern physicians are also experienced in minimally invasive procedures, should surgery be required.
