Normal bone (left) and one with osteoporosis.

It is estimated that 10 million Americans over age 50 have osteoporosis, while another 34 million are at risk for developing the bone disease. Osteoporosis and other bone diseases have a significant impact on quality of life and can affect a person’s ability to walk, stand up, and even dress. Ultimately, it can lead to premature death.

UT Southwestern Medical Center is recognized as one of the nation’s leading clinical and research centers for the prevention, accurate diagnosis, and effective treatment of the spectrum of bone and mineral disorders.

Some of the bone diseases routinely treated at UT Southwestern include:

  • Osteomalacia
  • Osteoporosis
  • Paget’s disease of the bone
  • Renal bone disease

UT Southwestern physicians combine thoughtful, attentive care with state-of-the-art clinical and research resources unrivaled by other health care institutions. Our experienced physicians collaborate with patients to evaluate and select treatments that will achieve the highest level of results.

In addition to bone density tests, our physicians can perform a bone biopsy for histomorphometric analysis in patients with complex bone disorders, a procedure that is only available at a few centers in the U.S.

Patients are given lifestyle counseling to prevent bone loss and may be prescribed medication to manage their disease. UT Southwestern physicians are also experienced in minimally invasive procedures, should surgery be required.
