Biography
Amma Asare, M.D., Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at UT Southwestern Medical Center. She specializes in medical management and targeted therapy for gynecological malignancies and radical cytoreductive surgery for gynecologic cancers.
Dr. Asare graduated from the Tri-Institutional M.D./Ph.D. program in New York City. She earned her medical degree at Weill Cornell Medical College and her doctorate in cell and developmental biology from Rockefeller University. She completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Baylor College of Medicine, where she served as Chief Resident. She received advanced training through a fellowship in gynecologic oncology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.
She joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2026.
In addition to her work with patients, Dr. Asare conducts research in the UT Southwestern Cecil H. and Ida Green Center for Reproductive Biology Sciences. Her research focuses on understanding how ovarian cancer cells adapt to survive medical treatment, making each recurrence more challenging to manage. Using patient and mouse tumor models, her research analyzes individual cancer cells during therapy administration to reveal the changes that enable these cells to resist treatment. Her goal is to determine how cell fate plasticity and clonal selection facilitate the evolution of resistant tumors and strategically exploit these processes to control tumor growth.
Dr. Asare is a member of the Society of Gynecologic Oncology, where she has contributed to both the Program Committee and the Abstract Review Committee. She is also a member of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. In 2026, she earned the Clinical Education Resident/Fellow Excellence Award for Professionalism from MD Anderson Cancer Center.
