Biography
Catherine Karni, M.D., is a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at UT Southwestern Medical Center. She specializes in pediatric psychiatry.
Dr. Karni earned her medical degree at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki School of Medicine in Greece, where she also completed a residency in psychiatry. She performed an additional residency in psychiatry at New York Medical College, serving as Chief Resident her final year. She then gained advanced training in child and adolescent psychiatry through a fellowship at Mount Sinai School of Medicine.
Certified in child, adolescent, and adult psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, she joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2002.
Dr. Karni is the Medical Director of the Outpatient Service and its Early Childhood Mental Health Clinic at Children’s Medical Center Dallas. A Distinguished Fellow of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and a former President of the Texas Society of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, she has presented at conferences around the world, sharing her research on preschool-aged children with behavioral problems.
Her clinical interests include early childhood mental health differences such as autism, developmental disabilities, and trauma, as well as ADHD, learning disorders, anxiety, and depression.
Dr. Karni is a three-time recipient of the David A. Waller, M.D. Outstanding Child and Adolescent Teacher of the Year Award.

When she’s not at work, Dr. Karni enjoys gardening, traveling, and learning about other cultures.
