Biography

Essie Mathews, D.N.P., APRN, ACNP-BC, is an Advanced Practice Nurse in the Division of Neurocritical Care at UT Southwestern Medical Center. She specializes in neurocritical care. 

Dr. Mathews holds a master’s degree in acute care nursing practice from UT Health Science Center in San Antonio. She earned her doctorate in nursing practice at Texas Woman’s University in Dallas. Certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, she joined UT Southwestern in 2012.

Dr. Mathews’ clinical expertise encompasses neurovascular diseases including subarachnoid and intracranial hemorrhage, acute ischemic stroke, status epilepticus and seizures, brain tumors, central nervous system infections, neuromuscular disorders with respiratory failure, and postoperative neurosurgical care. She is skilled in central line, PICC line, and arterial line insertions.
