Biography

Izabella De Abreu, M.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at UT Southwestern Medical Center. She specializes in depression, geriatric psychiatry, and behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia and caregiver burden.

Dr. Dutra de Abreu earned her medical degree at Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora in Brazil and completed psychiatric training at Instituto Raul Soares-FHEMIG in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. She practiced as a psychiatrist in Brazil for eight years before moving to the U.S. She completed a residency in psychiatry at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and received advanced training through a geriatric psychiatry fellowship at UT Southwestern Medical Center. She also holds a master's degree in geriatric psychiatry from the University of São Paulo.

Certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in general psychiatry and geriatric psychiatry, she joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2017. She serves on the Psychiatry Medical Education Committee.

Dr. Dutra de Abreu is a member of the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry, where she serves on the Teaching and Training Committee. She also belongs to the American Psychiatric Association and the Texas Society of Psychiatric Physicians.

Her clinical interests include dementia with an emphasis on Alzheimer’s disease and mild cognitive impairment.

Dr. Dutra de Abreu has published several academic articles, case reports, and clinical guidelines related to her areas of expertise.
