Biography
Joe Kwon, M.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at UT Southwestern Medical Center. He specializes in psychiatry, with a subspecialty in addiction psychiatry.
Dr. Kwon earned his medical degree at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Chicago. He completed a residency in general psychiatry at the New York University School of Medicine, where he also gained advanced training through an addiction psychiatry fellowship.
Certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in general psychiatry and addiction psychiatry, he joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2016.
Dr. Kwon serves as the Medical Director of the Psychiatric Emergency Service at Parkland Health. He also serves on, among others, the Peer Review Oversight Committee at Parkland Health and the Psychiatric Hospital Admissions and ER Transfer Subcommittee, which is helping design the new Texas Behavioral Health Center at UT Southwestern, a state psychiatric hospital.
He is a member of the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry, the American Association for Emergency Psychiatry, and the American Psychiatric Association.
Dr. Kwon has contributed to peer-reviewed publications on the topics of substance abuse and emergency psychiatry, and he has lectured on acute psychiatric care settings.
Personal Note
In his free time, Dr. Kwon enjoys spending time with his family. He is an avid football fan, of reality and fantasy alike, and likes to dabble in music by playing his guitar, nowadays exclusively for his children at home.
