Biography

Joseph Cioffi, M.D., is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Chief of the Division of General Obstetrics and Gynecology at UT Southwestern Medical Center. He specializes in high-risk pregnancy, obstetrical labor management, and surgery related to obstetrics.

Dr. Cioffi earned his medical degree at the University of Navarra in Spain and completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia. In addition, he earned an M.B.A. in health care administration from George Washington University. Prior to his medical training, he earned a Master of Science in psychology from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a Master of Science in biomedical sciences from C.W. Post College.

Certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, he joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2023.

During his 12 years at NYU Langone University Hospital, Dr. Cioffi developed the first Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospitalist Program in the United States in 2011. He was the Director of the Hospitalist Division of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Hospitalist Fellowship Program at NYU Langone until his move to UT Southwestern.

From 2003 to 2011, he served as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Chief of Gynecologic Services, Director of Gynecologic and Robotic Surgery, and Director of Labor and Delivery Inpatient Clinical Services at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, New Jersey.

In addition to his work in academic medicine, Dr. Cioffi has 16 years of clinical private practice experience, both in physician groups and as a solo practitioner.

He is a member of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the Society of OB/GYN Hospitalists and serves as an ad hoc reviewer for the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Dr. Cioffi’s recent publications include a contribution to the book OB/GYN Hospital Medicine: Principles and Practice.

Personal Note

When he’s not at work, Dr. Cioffi enjoys traveling. He is also a foodie and wine and spirits enthusiast.
