Meet Dr. Patel
Kishan G. Patel, M.D., is an ophthalmologist specializing in complex cataract surgery and diseases of the retina and vitreous, such as macular degeneration. He is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at UT Southwestern and practices at both the Fort Worth and Dallas campuses.
Dr. Patel's journey from engineering to ophthalmology highlights his diverse background and passion for the field.
"I explored ophthalmology during medical school and quickly fell in love with the eye's complexities and the potential to make a significant impact through practice and teaching,” he says.
Education is central to Dr. Patel's career.
"I strive to involve my patients in their care and explain everything in layperson's terms. Additionally, training the next generation of surgeons and ophthalmologists is an honor,” he says. "I am proud to be intimately involved in UT Southwestern's greater mission of giving back."
Complex Cataract Surgery at UT Southwestern
Dr. Patel teaches residents the intricacies of cataract surgery, emphasizing both technical skills and patient interaction.
"Cataract surgery is nuanced, and it's important to train residents in the surgery itself and in excellent, patient-centric care," he says.
Cataract surgery is common, but complex cases or secondary surgeries occasionally arise. Dr. Patel often assists residents during these surgeries, stepping in when needed.
"Higher-risk cataract surgeries are rare, but we see more of them at UT Southwestern due to our academic setting and patient population," he explains.
As an expert in complicated cataract surgery, Dr. Patel employs various techniques to address complex cases, such as refixing dislocated implants, exchanging them for new ones, or using advanced methods customized to each patient's needs.
"I tailor my technique based on the eye's anatomy and the patient's vision," he says “At times, this can be a multi-team effort.”
One of the benefits of UT Southwestern is the diversity of specialists under one roof, allowing the doctors to address the patient’s various needs during a single surgery. This multidisciplinary approach within one center also allows ophthalmologists to collaborate with other fields.
"For example, if I find a patient presents with certain retinal conditions, it can be a risk factor for a stroke. In a case like this, I could work with the neurology, cardiology, and vascular surgery teams and hopefully prevent it," Dr. Patel says.
Macular Degeneration at UT Southwestern
Dr. Patel's expertise covers a range of eye diseases and complex surgeries. His knowledge extends to both the anterior and posterior segments of the eye.
"Patients with macular degeneration, which affects the back of the eye, require a different approach," he says.
Macular degeneration, prevalent in individuals over 50, affects the macula, a part of the retina responsible for central vision. While it leads to vision loss, it doesn't typically cause complete blindness. Advances in treatment can help slow the disease's progression.
At UT Southwestern, Dr. Patel utilizes cutting-edge technology to enhance patient care.
"Building relationships with my patients and partnering with them in their care is very fulfilling. It's exciting to be part of an evolving specialty that can change lives," he says.
Department of Ophthalmology at UT Southwestern
One of the many things that drew Dr. Patel to UT Southwestern was the opportunity to teach. The university has one of the largest ophthalmology training programs in the country. After completing his fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis, he returned to UT Southwestern, where he had previously completed his residency.
"After residency, I wanted to diversify my skills and training so I could bring my best to UT Southwestern’s Ophthalmology Department, the students, and our patients," he says.
Dr. Patel's commitment to the next generation of surgeons is unwavering. His primary goal is to help them excel while advancing the specialty to benefit patients. He works to ensure that patient care remains uncompromised in the operating room, upholding UT Southwestern's high standards and patient-centric reputation.
Personal Note
In his free time, Dr. Patel enjoys spending time with his wife and family; graphic and web design; photography and video editing; cooking and baking; coffee brewing and roasting; and sports such as tennis, table tennis, hiking, and snowboarding.
