Biography
Michael McDowell, D.O., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at UT Southwestern Medical Center. He is a board-certified pediatric pulmonologist with a clinical and research focus on interstitial lung disease, pulmonary hypertension, and bronchopulmonary dysplasia.
Dr. McDowell earned his medical degree at the Kansas City University College of Medicine and Biosciences. He completed a residency in general pediatrics at Children’s Mercy Kansas City and received advanced training through a pediatric pulmonary medicine fellowship at Texas Children’s Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine.
Certified by the American Board of Pediatrics, he joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2025.
Dr. McDowell is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Thoracic Society. He has delivered numerous presentations related to his areas of expertise.
In 2024, Dr. McDowell earned the Dean’s Teaching Excellence Award from McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston.
Personal Note
Dr. McDowell is passionate about caring for children with complex and rare respiratory conditions, using the latest evidence-based guidelines and international best practices. Driven by a deep sense of empathy and dedication, he strives to ensure that each patient and family receives personalized, comprehensive care in a supportive and collaborative environment.
“I am passionate about practicing pediatric pulmonary medicine because it allows me to build long-term, meaningful relationships with children and their families as they navigate complex, chronic respiratory conditions,” he says. “This field gives me the privilege of making a lasting difference in the lives of my patients – supporting them not only through critical illness but also through the milestones of growth and healing.”
When he’s not at work, Dr. McDowell enjoys working out, playing with his dogs, traveling, and spending time outdoors.
