Sonal Bhatia, M.D.

Biography

Sonal Bhatia, M.D., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at UT Southwestern Medical Center. She specializes in genetic epilepsies and infantile spasms.

Dr. Bhatia earned her medical degree at Topiwala National Medical College and Bai Yamunabai Laxman Nair Charitable Hospital in Mumbai, India. She completed a residency in pediatrics at Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital, also in Mumbai. She went on to complete pediatric neurology residencies at both the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center and the Medical University of South Carolina. Additionally, gained advanced training through an epilepsy fellowship at the Medical University of South Carolina.

Certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in child neurology and epilepsy, she joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2025. She previously served as the Associate Program Director for the Child Neurology Residency Program and Director of the Pediatric Epilepsy Monitoring Unit at the Medical University of South Carolina.

Dr. Bhatia is a Fellow of the American Epilepsy Society and the American Clinical Neurophysiology Society. She’s an active member of the Pediatric Epilepsy Research Consortium, serving as Chair of its Genetics Special Interest Group. In addition, she serves on the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee of the American Clinical Neurophysiology Society.

Dr. Bhatia has delivered numerous presentations, contributed to the book Recent Advances in Pediatrics: Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, and published more than 45 academic articles related to her areas of expertise.
