Biography

Chinemerem Okwara, M.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center. He specializes in general gastroenterology and small bowel bleeding.

Dr. Okwara earned his medical degree at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He completed a residency in internal medicine at UT Southwestern and received advanced training in gastroenterology through a fellowship at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.

Board certified in gastroenterology and internal medicine, he joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2020.

Dr. Okwara is a staff physician at UTSW’s William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital (CUH) and Parkland Memorial Hospital, and at CUH he serves on both the EASy Nutrition Committee and Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee. He is also a Gotcha Covered Mentor for incoming minority medical students.

A member of the American Gastroenterological Association, the American College of Gastroenterology, and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, Dr. Okwara has published research articles and case reports related to his areas of interest.

Personal Note

Dr. Okwara has a passion for delivering quality care to his patients and sharing his knowledge and experience with the next generation of providers. He chose to pursue academic medicine because it provides an opportunity for lifelong learning in a constantly evolving field.

When he is not at work, Dr. Okwara enjoys spending time with his growing family and friends, as well as playing basketball, learning to play tennis, gardening, and traveling.
