Biography
Daniel Addison, M.D., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center, where he serves as the Director of Translational Research in the Cardiology Division and Associate Director for Survivorship and Outcomes Research in the Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center. He also holds the Audre and Bernard Rapport Endowed Chair in Cardiovascular Research. He specializes in cardio-oncology and advanced cardiac imaging.
Dr. Addison earned his medical degree at Meharry Medical College in Tennessee. He completed a residency in internal medicine and received advanced training through a cardiovascular diseases fellowship at the Baylor College of Medicine. He completed an additional fellowship in advanced cardiac imaging at Massachusetts General Hospital. He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in cardiovascular disease.
Prior to being recruited to UT Southwestern in 2025, Dr. Addison was an associate professor with tenure at the Ohio State University, where he served as director of the cardio-oncology program and led its rapid academic and clinical expansion to involve nearly a dozen faculty members.
Dr. Addison’s research focuses on defining the drivers and consequences of cardiovascular disease in patients requiring cancer treatment, with the goal of identifying novel prevention strategies. His multiple R01 grant-funded research program uses advanced cardiac imaging (echo, CT, MRI, nuclear) and molecular approaches to identify novel pathways and strategies for the prevention of cardiac disease among cancer patients.
He has served in multiple leadership roles within the American Heart Association (AHA), the American College of Cardiology, the National Cancer Institute (NCI)'s Alliance for Clinical Trials, and other professional societies, and he has chaired or led multiple societal consensus statements. He was selected to join the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Basic Biology of Blood, Heart, and Vasculature study section as a standing member and has served as ad-hoc Chair of NIH Special Emphasis panels. He also is the lead Principal Investigator for a National Cancer Institute (NCI) cooperative group-supported cardiotoxicity prevention multicenter randomized controlled trial and serves as Chair of the AHA’s Council on Cardiovascular Radiology and Intervention. He is an associate editor of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC): Cardiovascular Imaging.
Dr. Addison brings a track record of funded research and mentoring to UT Southwestern. He is the Principal Investigator on multiple NIH R01, AHA, and Cancer Prevention & Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) awards. Several of his mentees have received NCI, ASCO, and AHA research awards. He has delivered numerous invited national and international presentations and published over 145 peer-reviewed scientific articles in high-impact journals such as Circulation, JAMA: Oncology, and Blood. Dr. Addison is also an elected member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation.
