Biography
George Rateb, M.D., FASGE, FJGES, is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine’s Division of Digestive and Liver Diseases at UT Southwestern Medical Center. He specializes in interventional hepatobiliary endoscopy, third-space digestive endoscopy techniques, and complex endoscopic procedures.
Dr. Rateb earned his medical degree at Cairo University in Egypt, where he also earned a master's degree and defended a doctoral thesis in internal medicine. After completing a residency in internal medicine at Cairo University Hospitals, he gained advanced training through fellowships in gastroenterology and interventional hepatobiliary endoscopy at Paul Sabatier University in Toulouse, France, and pursued further supplementary training in third-space endoscopy in Japan and Belgium. He also holds a master’s degree in management and health leadership from McGill University.
Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, he joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2024.
Prior to joining UT Southwestern, Dr. Rateb established the Interventional Endoscopy Fellowship Program at the University of Sherbrooke in Quebec, Canada, where he served as an Associate Professor and provided training and mentorship to numerous national and international graduates. He later served as Professor and Chief of the Gastroenterology Division at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center.
Dr. Rateb is a Fellow of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and an international elected fellow of the Japan Gastroenterological Endoscopy Society. He is also a member of the Canadian Medical Association, the French Society of Digestive Endoscopy, and the Quebec Association of Gastroenterologists.
He has delivered presentations around the world and has published peer-reviewed academic articles related to his areas of expertise.
