Biography
Joseph Joo, M.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center. He specializes in general internal medicine. Dr. Joo serves as the Associate Director of Care Delivery Redesign for the Program on Policy Evaluation and Learning at UT Southwestern, where his work focuses on improving health care delivery through policy and practice change.
Dr. Joo earned his medical degree at Texas A&M University College of Medicine and completed his internal medicine residency with a distinction in care transformation at Dell Medical School at the University of Texas at Austin. He holds a master’s degree in health services from the University of Washington.
Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, he joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2025.
Dr. Joo conducts research with an emphasis on health systems topics, including population health interventions to improve care transitions. He has published his research in notable peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of General Internal Medicine, the Journal of Hospital Medicine, and Health Affairs. He has given regional, national, and international presentations on his work studying the impact of technology, care delivery models, and payment incentives on care delivery outcomes.
In 2024, Dr. Joo co-authored the book Reshaping Health Systems: What Drives Health Care and How You Can Change It. The book, based on his research on the systems factors that are currently driving health care, offers actionable strategies for clinicians to make positive changes in their own practice.
In 2025, Dr. Joo was awarded the Graduate of the Last Decade (GOLD) Award from the Texas A&M University College of Medicine.
