Biography
Katherine Smith, M.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at UT Southwestern Medical Center. She is a fellowship-trained, minimally invasive gynecologic surgeon specializing in the care of patients with endometriosis, uterine fibroids, chronic pelvic pain, and abnormal menstrual bleeding.
Dr. Smith earned her medical degree at the McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston. She completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. After her residency, she completed a fellowship in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery (MIGS) at the Cleveland Clinic Weston Hospital in Florida.
She was certified by the American Board of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ABOG) in 2018 and was awarded her ABOG Focused Practice designation in MIGS in 2021. She joined the UT Southwestern faculty in early 2022.
She is involved in clinical research and has contributed to texts and published multiple peer-reviewed articles related to her areas of expertise. She is active in surgical education and currently serves as the Associate Program Director for the UT Southwestern Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery Fellowship.
Dr. Smith offers both hysterectomy- and uterine-sparing options for the management of endometriosis, including excisional surgery. She believes in a holistic approach for all patients, especially those affected by chronic pelvic pain, and often collaborates with pelvic health and physical therapy services to optimize pre- and postoperative outcomes.
She offers fertility-sparing treatments for leiomyoma (fibroid) disease, including minimally invasive myomectomies (fibroid removal) and radiofrequency fibroid ablations. She also performs complex hysterectomies for patients for whom uterine preservation is not in line with their goals.
Personal Note
A Dallas native, Dr. Smith is at home in Big D. When she’s not at work, she enjoys spending quality time with her husband and children, traveling, diving into a good book, and enjoying delicious food.
