Biography

Mariam El-Ashmawy, M.D., Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center. She specializes in the treatment of advanced skin cancer, sarcoma, and malignancies in organ transplant recipients.

Dr. El-Ashmawy earned her combined medical and doctoral degrees in cancer biology at UT Southwestern. She completed a residency in internal medicine at Bellevue hospital and New York University Langone Health and received advanced training in hematology-oncology through a fellowship at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital and Columbia University Irving Medical Center.

Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in medical oncology, Dr. El-Ashmawy joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2026.

She is a member of multiple professional organizations, including the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Association for Cancer Research, and the Texas Medical Association.

Her research interests include the development of new therapies for skin cancer, especially in patients with compromised immune systems. She leads clinical trials in melanoma, nonmelanoma skin cancers, and sarcoma. She has presented her work at national and international conferences and published peer-reviewed academic articles related to her areas of expertise.

Personal Note

When she’s not at work, Dr. El-Ashmawy enjoys gardening, cooking, and taking in art, comedy, and music.
