Biography
Matthew Wise, D.O., CAQSM, is an Assistant Professor in the Departments of Family and Community Medicine and Orthopaedic Surgery at UT Southwestern Medical Center. He specializes in sports medicine.
Dr. Wise earned his medical degree at The University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth. He completed a residency in family medicine at the University of Washington and received advanced fellowship training in sports medicine at the University of Utah.
Certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and Sports Medicine, he joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2023.
Dr. Wise serves as Team Physician for the University of Dallas and Ranchview High School in Irving, Texas. During his fellowship training, he worked with the NBA’s Utah Jazz and their G-League affiliate Salt Lake City Stars, the MLS’ Real Salt Lake and their Next Pro affiliate Real Monarchs, and the NCAA Division I University of Utah Utes.
He also has experience providing medical coverage for several national governing bodies of the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic committees, including U.S. Speedskating, USA Luge, and USA Climbing and Paraclimbing. Since 2015, Dr. Wise has organized and covered multiple mass sporting events, including the Cowtown, Seattle, and Salt Lake City marathons.
His clinical interests include acute and chronic musculoskeletal injuries of adults and children, osteoarthritis, concussion, sports physicals, osteopathic manual therapy, diagnostic ultrasound, and advanced ultrasound-guided procedures, including:
- Joint injections and aspirations for arthritis
- Bursal injections for overuse injuries of the shoulders and hips
- Tendon sheath injections for chronic tendinitis and trigger fingers
- Percutaneous tenotomy and barbotage for chronic tendonitis
- Muscle injections for trigger points and piriformis syndrome
- Ganglion cyst aspirations and injections
- Selective nerve injections and hydrodissections for peripheral nerve entrapment
He is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine, and the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM). He is an invited member of AMSSM’s Education Committee for Fellows Online Education and regularly moderates national lectures on sports medicine.
He has given several presentations and published academic articles related to his areas of expertise. Dr. Wise also has a strong interest in medical education and is involved in teaching and mentoring medical students, residents, and fellows.
Personal Note
Dr. Wise competed on the men’s soccer team at the University of Dallas and was a three-year team captain. As a former competitive athlete, Dr. Wise understands the impact pain and injury can have on quality of life. He enjoys getting to know his patients’ activity and exercise goals and then working together to achieve them.
