Biography
Max Schumm, M.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at UT Southwestern Medical Center. He specializes in endocrine surgery, with a focus on molecular diagnostics and the surgical management of thyroid nodules, thyroid cancer, and adrenal nodules.
Dr. Schumm earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin, where he was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He completed his general surgery residency at UCLA Medical Center, serving as a dedicated two-year research fellow. He gained advanced training in endocrine surgery through a fellowship at NYU Langone Health.
Certified by the American Board of Surgery, he joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2025.
His research portfolio includes over 25 peer-reviewed publications in high-impact journals such as JAMA Surgery, JAMA Otolaryngology, the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, and Surgery. His work explores the integration of molecular diagnostics in the prognosis and treatment of thyroid cancer, surgical decision-making, patient-centered outcomes in thyroid cancer care, the use of health informatics to identify and manage incidental endocrine findings, and more. His research has been presented at national meetings, including those of the American Thyroid Association, the World Congress on Thyroid Cancer, the American College of Surgeons, and the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons.
Dr. Schumm is an Associate Member of the American College of Surgeons and the American Thyroid Association and a Candidate Member of the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons.
Personal Note
When he’s not at work, Dr. Schumm enjoys playing golf and pickleball, traveling, and supporting Bay Area sports teams – the Golden State Warriors, 49ers, and San Francisco Giants.
