Biography

Sowmya Sunkara, M.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at UT Southwestern Medical Center. She specializes in the treatment of uterine fibroids, abnormal uterine bleeding, and endometriosis.

Dr. Sunkara earned her medical degree at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine. She completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology and a fellowship in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery at Baylor College of Medicine and the Houston Medical Center.

She joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2023.

Dr. Sunkara is involved in several areas of ongoing research, including umbilical wound complications post-laparoscopy, how operating room closures during COVID-19 affected hysterectomies, and pain management in robotic endometriosis surgeries.

She has delivered lectures, presentations, and seminars and published numerous academic articles related to her areas of expertise.

Dr. Sunkara is a Junior Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. She is also a member of the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists.

Personal Note

When she’s not at work, Dr. Sunkara enjoys spending time with her husband and son, watching movies, and traveling.
