Biography

Stephen Kimatian, M.D., is a Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Management at UT Southwestern Medical Center. He specializes in adult and pediatric anesthesiology, pediatric cardiac anesthesiology, and adult congenital cardiac anesthesiology.

Dr. Kimatian earned his medical degree at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at SUNY University at Buffalo. He completed a residency in anesthesiology at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, where he served as Chief Resident, and received advanced fellowship training in pediatric anesthesiology at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Ohio, where he served as Chief Fellow.

Certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology in anesthesiology and pediatric anesthesiology, he joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2017.

He is the Interim Chair for the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Management at UT Southwestern, as well as the Vice Chair of Pediatric Anesthesiology. At Children’s Health, he serves as Anesthesiologist in Chief for the Department of Pediatric Anesthesiology, and he is the President and Chair of Anesthesiologists for Children, the pediatric anesthesiology group that serves the Children’s Health system.

Dr. Kimatian is an examiner for the American Board of Anesthesiology and an expert panelist for the Texas Medical Board. He has made significant contributions to graduate medical education in anesthesiology and has been recognized as a Distinguished Teaching Professor by the Southwestern Academy of Teachers and as a Distinguished Educator by the American Society of Anesthesiologists. He has also received several national teaching awards, including the Duke Award for Excellence in Education from the Society for Education in Anesthesia and the Teaching Recognition Award for Innovation in Education from the International Anesthesia Research Society.

A Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, he is a member of numerous professional associations, including the Society for Pediatric Anesthesia and the Society for Education in Anesthesia, for whom he serves as the Co-Director of the Workshop on Teaching. He serves as scientific adviser to the board of directors of The Children’s Cancer Foundation and is an ad hoc reviewer for the Journal of Education in Perioperative Medicine, the American Society for Artificial Internal Organs Journal, and the Journal of Clinical Anesthesia.

Dr Kimatian’s clinical research is focused on neuroprotection during the perioperative period, with a specific focus on pediatric patients with congenital heart disease. Academically, Dr Kimatian has published numerous papers focused on graduate medical education and leadership development.

Dr. Kimatian is also a specialist in aerospace medicine. He served as a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Air Force and is a senior flight surgeon for the 301st Medical Squadron, 301st Mission Support Group, within the 10th Air Force at the Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base Fort Worth. His military service is distinguished; he has received the Air Force Commendation Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, and the Malcolm C. Grow Award as the AF Flight Surgeon of the Year.

Personal Note

When he’s not at work, Dr. Kimatian enjoys spending time with his family; exercising; fly-fishing; and shooting trap, skeet, and sporting clays. He is also a commercial pilot, with fixed- and rotary-wing ratings.
